Baghdad expands layered missile and counter-drone capabilities as it moves to rebuild fragmented air defense network after recent conflict pressures
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Iraq is accelerating efforts to rebuild its fragmented air defense system, unveiling new procurement deals and a broader strategy aimed at countering missiles, drones, and low-altitude aerial threats.
The move comes after Iraqi officials confirmed in early May that Baghdad is finalizing the purchase of 20 Turkish air defense systems, following months of heightened regional escalation and increased violations of Iraqi airspace during the recent Iran conflict.
Authorities say the new approach reflects lessons learned from recent warfare, where Iraqi territory was repeatedly crossed by missiles and drones from multiple actors, exposing gaps in national air defense coverage and coordination.
Alongside the Turkish systems, Iraq is set to receive eight South Korean KM-SAM medium-range air defense batteries under a $2.8 billion agreement signed in 2024, forming the backbone of a new multi-layered defense structure.
Officials describe the emerging model as a layered architecture combining medium-range interception systems with short-range and counter-drone platforms designed to protect critical infrastructure and military assets.
The Turkish systems are expected to focus on low-altitude threats, including drones and loitering munitions, while also providing protection for higher-value missile defense assets such as the South Korean batteries.
Defense analysts say Iraq’s current system remains limited, relying on a mix of US-supplied Avenger systems, Russian Pantsir-S1 units, and older Soviet-era MANPADS, which provide point defense but lack nationwide coverage.
Previous attempts to acquire advanced systems such as US Patriot or Russian S-300 and S-400 platforms were not completed, leaving Iraq with a fragmented and uneven air defense network since 2003.
Military experts note that recent conflicts have highlighted the growing importance of low-cost drone warfare, where expensive interceptor missiles are often unsuitable for engaging cheap unmanned systems.
Iraq’s diversification strategy also reflects political and logistical considerations, with South Korea and Turkey emerging as preferred suppliers due to faster delivery timelines, fewer political constraints, and easier long-term maintenance arrangements.
Officials also point to growing interest in South Korean KM-SAM systems across the Gulf region, where similar platforms have been deployed as part of layered defense networks against missile and aerial threats.
However, analysts warn that the main challenge for Iraq will be integration, as the country works to connect radars, command systems, training structures, and maintenance networks into a unified operational defense framework.
Despite new acquisitions, Iraq continues to face institutional fragmentation and coordination challenges across security forces, which may complicate efforts to centralize air defense operations.
The broader strategy reflects Iraq’s attempt to transition from isolated point defense systems toward a coordinated, multi-layered architecture designed for modern drone and missile warfare.
