Guterres, Syria’s al-Sharaa discuss political transition in New York
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in New York to discuss Syria’s ongoing political transition
NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in New York to discuss Syria’s ongoing political transition, his office said Wednesday.
Guterres emphasized the need to advance the process through inclusive dialogue and broad participation, while underscoring the importance of safeguarding Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He also voiced concern over “violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement” and highlighted the role of cooperation between the UN and Syria in supporting stability.
The two leaders also exchanged views on broader Middle East developments.
The talks marked a significant moment in Syria’s political shift. Former president Bashar al-Assad, who ruled for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia in December, ending the Baath Party’s rule that began in 1963.
Al-Sharaa’s transitional administration was formed in January. Earlier this week, he became the first Syrian president since 1967 to address the UN General Assembly.
