Roughly 35% of global urea trade moves through the narrow waterway. Advances in high-yield crop varieties transformed agriculture across Asia and Latin America, dramatically boosting production and reducing famine risks. But these gains came with a dependency: intensive use of industrial fertilizers, particularly nitrogen-based products such as urea and ammonium nitrate.
These fertilizers are derived from natural gas, effectively linking global food production to energy markets. Over time, hydrocarbon-rich Persian Gulf states leveraged this connection, investing heavily in petrochemical industries to become leading producers of ammonia and urea. By 2024, the region accounted for more than a third of global urea exports.
This concentration of supply has created a strategic bottleneck. Nearly all shipments must pass through the Strait of Hormuz, making the stability of this maritime corridor essential to global agriculture. In periods of conflict, however, the strait’s proximity to Iran transforms it into a point of vulnerability.
Early signs of strain are already visible in key agricultural regions. In the United States, farmers preparing for planting season are facing sharply rising fertilizer costs. Surveys by the American Farm Bureau Federation indicate that a significant majority of farmers are unable to secure sufficient fertilizer, with urea prices reaching record highs.
The consequences are cascading. Reduced fertilizer application leads to lower crop yields, diminished farm incomes and, ultimately, higher food prices for consumers. What begins as a supply disruption in a distant waterway quickly translates into economic pressure on households thousands of miles away.
The situation illustrates a broader paradox. Efforts to pressure Iran have instead exposed the global system’s dependence on stable transit through waters adjacent to its territory. Iran has not formally closed the strait, nor has it directly halted fertilizer shipments, yet the mere risk environment has been sufficient to disrupt trade flows.
This dynamic has placed Tehran in an unexpected position of influence. Its geographic location effectively makes it a gatekeeper of a critical supply route, not through deliberate policy but as a consequence of global dependency on the corridor.
For now, Iran maintains that its posture in the strait is defensive, focused on safeguarding its territorial waters. However, the persistence of conflict continues to amplify uncertainty, leaving markets on edge and supply chains under strain.
