DHAKA (MNTV) – While Bangladesh’s Election Commission has yet to formally announce results, unofficial tallies indicate the Bangladesh Nationalist Party is headed for a commanding parliamentary majority that would enable it to govern independently.
Various sources are reporting different counts as results continue to emerge.
In the most recent update, the Election Commission indicated BNP had secured 209 seats and Jamaat-e-Islami-led coalition was placed with 74 seats.
Reuters, citing local broadcaster Jamuna, reported BNP winning 212 seats with Jamaat-e-Islami securing 70.
The Daily Star placed BNP leading in at least 170 constituencies as of early Friday.
The differing figures reflect the ongoing count across Bangladesh’s 299 constituencies, with results trickling in throughout the day and night.
Regardless of the exact final tally, the trend points clearly toward BNP securing well over the two-thirds majority needed to form government independently—a remarkable outcome for the party.
BNP leader Tarique Rahman urged supporters to refrain from public celebrations, offering Friday prayers at a mosque while calling for restraint. The party hopes to form government by Sunday.
The Election Commission reported 59.44 percent voter turnout.
Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah pledged commitment to transparent and impartial elections while requesting understanding for administrative shortcomings.
The commission’s results website remains inaccessible with no official postings.
Jamaat-e-Islami issued a statement expressing concern about the results process, citing “inconsistencies and fabrications in unofficial result announcements” and “indications that a section of the administration leaned towards a major party.”
The coalition urged patience while awaiting its official response, stating: “Our struggle for justice in pursuit of a humane Bangladesh will continue.”
