Delaware sheriff Siddiq Kamara targeted in racist, Islamophobic threat
Anonymous voicemail to sheriff's official line has prompted a criminal investigation; Kamara released it to show residents its seriousness
WILMINGTON (MNTV) — Delaware County Sheriff Siddiq Kamara has been targeted by what officials describe as a racist and Islamophobic threat of violence left in an anonymous voicemail, prompting a criminal investigation.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office said detectives are tracing the message, which came over the weekend through the office’s official phone line and contained hateful, threatening language aimed at Kamara.
The county council condemned the incident and voiced support for the sheriff and his staff, saying intimidation and hate have no place in the community.
Kamara said the message was meant to frighten him and disrupt his office but had instead strengthened his commitment to the work. Public officials, he noted, are open to criticism and disagreement — but threats of violence are criminal conduct, not political expression.
He said he released the voicemail for transparency, so residents could see the seriousness of what happened, and thanked investigators and community leaders.
The case adds to mounting concern about threats against public officials, particularly those from minority backgrounds, and about how quickly hateful rhetoric aimed at religious and ethnic communities can shade into intimidation.
Kamara said it would not deflect the department from its work on accountability and public trust, as authorities continue tracing the source.
