Bangladesh students shine at global mathematics championship
Bangladesh team wins nine silver and 22 bronze medals at World Mathematics Team Championship in Bangkok, placing four squads in top global tier
DHAKA, Bangladesh (MNTV) — Bangladesh has recorded a remarkable achievement on the global academic stage, after its student delegation won nine silver medals and 22 bronze medals at the World Mathematics Team Championship (WMTC) 2025 held in Bangkok, Thailand, marking one of the country’s strongest performances in an international STEM competition.
According to The Daily Campus, an independent education-focused media outlet, five additional students received merit awards, while four Bangladeshi squads secured positions within the top 30 percent of teams worldwide.
The tournament brings together young mathematicians from several countries to compete in the Junior, Intermediate, and Advanced divisions.
Organizers and observers say Bangladesh’s results reflect rising investment in STEM capacity, competitive mathematics coaching and growing enthusiasm for global Olympiad platforms among students.
Ahmed Shahriar, team coach and co-founder of Banglar Math, said the road to the championship required overcoming significant logistical hurdles, particularly obtaining visas for all participants and coordinating complex travel arrangements under tight timelines.
He noted that support from the South-East Asia Wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs played a decisive role in enabling the team’s participation.
The national squad was selected through the Banglar Math Team Championship 2025, following online qualifiers, national rounds and a final team assessment, before undergoing two months of intensive training.
Education analysts say Bangladesh’s expanding presence in global STEM competitions is reshaping perceptions of the country’s academic strength as regional rivals intensify efforts to build math and science talent.
