Algeria advances solar plant project to power Gara Djebilet region
200-megawatt facility to support mining operations, urban growth, and regional development under national renewable energy strategy
TINDOUF, Algeria (MNTV) — Algeria is advancing construction of a 200-megawatt solar power plant in the Gara Djebilet region of Tindouf province as part of its national strategy to expand renewable energy and promote sustainable development in the country’s southern areas.
Mustapha Benabdelkader, the provincial Director of Energy, said the project is progressing rapidly and is expected to strengthen electricity supply for key economic facilities, including the strategically significant Gara Djebilet iron ore mine.
He said the first phase of the project will be connected through two 30-kilovolt power lines linked to an existing station, while the broader plan includes high-voltage transmission lines with capacities of 120 to 130 kilovolts to support long-term demand.
The solar facility is being built at a strategic junction connecting the national highway to the Gara Djebilet base, alongside a major electricity distribution station designed to supply multiple industrial units planned for the region.
Benabdelkader said the plant will play a central role in meeting the power needs of processing facilities, helping ensure energy self-sufficiency for industrial operations and associated infrastructure.
The project will also provide electricity to the city of Tindouf, amid rapid urban expansion and rising seasonal demand, and will supply power to the border crossing, the free zone, and future development projects in the province.
He added that a second gas-turbine power plant and an additional solar facility with a combined capacity of 360 megawatts are planned to cover provincial energy needs and ensure a stable and sustainable supply for economic projects in the area.
The initiative aims to deliver clean and reliable energy for the mine’s extraction and processing units and supporting infrastructure, while reducing reliance on conventional power sources and lowering operating costs over the medium and long term.
Officials said the project forms part of the government’s strategic vision under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to integrate renewable energy into major national projects, particularly in regions with strong solar potential such as Tindouf.
The development also reflects Algeria’s broader political commitment to strengthening the national economy, expanding renewable energy capacity, and balancing economic growth with environmental protection as part of efforts to build a diversified and sustainable economy.
