Vance says US in direct contact with Houthis after Red Sea island takeover
Washington says it is coordinating with Saudi Arabia and UAE while monitoring developments around strategic Mayun Island
WASHINGTON (MNTV) — US Vice President JD Vance said Monday that Washington is in direct contact with the Houthis following the group’s seizure of Mayun Island, a strategically located island in the Red Sea also known as Perim.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews before traveling to Kansas, Vance said the Trump administration was closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with regional partners.
“We’ve been in constant contact with the Emiratis, the Saudis, and others who are affected in the region,” Vance said.
He added that US officials had also been holding “direct conversations” with the Houthis.
“We actually feel like we are on top of the situation,” Vance said, describing developments as “very fluid and dynamic.”
He said Washington would continue monitoring the situation to ensure that US interests were protected.
Vance’s remarks come amid heightened fighting between Yemen’s government forces and the Houthis.
The escalation has also included Houthi attacks on energy facilities in Saudi Arabia, raising concerns over regional security and shipping routes through the Red Sea.
