Bangladesh, Australia deepen energy ties amid renewable push
Dhaka seeks Australian investment in solar, industry assets as energy demand rises and green transition becomes central to economic strategy
DHAKA, Bangladesh (MNTV) — Bangladesh and Australia are moving to deepen cooperation in renewable energy and economic development, as Dhaka seeks foreign investment to support its growing power needs and transition toward cleaner energy.
The emerging partnership reflects Bangladesh’s broader strategy to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, which have strained the economy during recent global price shocks. With electricity demand rising alongside rapid industrial growth, the government is prioritizing solar and other renewable sources to ensure long-term energy security.
Australia, with its advanced clean energy sector and investment capacity, is being positioned as a key partner in this shift. Officials from both countries have pointed to expanding opportunities not only in solar power but also in technology-driven industries and innovation-led growth.
The direction of cooperation was reinforced during recent talks in Dhaka between Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir and Australian High Commissioner Susan Ryle, where both sides discussed scaling up trade, investment, and collaboration in energy and industrial sectors.
Bangladesh is also opening up nearly $7 billion worth of industrial assets for private sector participation, in a bid to attract foreign capital, improve productivity, and generate employment. Authorities say such moves are designed to make the country more competitive as a destination for global investors.
Bilateral trade between the two countries has already reached about $5.14 billion and continues to grow, with officials highlighting strong potential for expansion in renewable energy and advanced technologies. An Australian delegation is currently assessing investment opportunities in Bangladesh, signaling increasing interest in long-term collaboration.
The growing engagement underscores how both countries are aligning around shared economic and energy priorities, as Bangladesh pushes for a greener industrial future and Australia looks to expand its footprint in emerging markets.
