Prominent Dutch far-right leader pushes for strict migration policies
Geert Wilders demands military border patrols and aggressive deportation policies
AMSTERDAM (MNTV) – Far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders has introduced a 10-point plan to drastically curb migration, increasing pressure on the fragile four-party coalition government that came to power in 2023.
Central to Wilders’ proposals are deploying the army to secure borders and rejecting all asylum-seekers attempting entry.
Other measures include suspending family reunification for recognized refugees, enforcing a “one strike you’re out” deportation rule for migrants convicted of violent or sexual crimes, and expediting the return of Syrians on temporary visas, arguing that “much of Syria is now safe.”
Citing migration policies in Germany as inspiration, Wilders called for the Netherlands to adopt similarly hardline measures.
“If migration policy isn’t toughened up, my party is out of the Cabinet,” he warned, highlighting the stakes for Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s coalition.
Wilders’ ultimatum has intensified divisions within the government, which includes the pro-business VVD, the centrist New Social Contract, and the agrarian Farmers Citizens Movement.
Although the coalition agreed last October to reintroduce border checks and limit family visas, progress has been slow, an outcome Wilders dismissed as insufficient to “turn the tide.”
To implement his proposals, the coalition would need to renegotiate its foundational agreement and pass new legislation.
However, with ongoing disagreements over budget allocations and climate policy, analysts warn that finding common ground on migration may be even more challenging—possibly threatening the government’s stability.
