A brush with serenity: Australian women find peace through painting
Dar-ul-Islam in Sydney suburb hosts painting workshop to empower women through creative expression
SYDNEY, Australia (MNTV) – A Muslim community center in an Australian city is harnessing the power of painting to support women’s healing and self-expression, bringing together participants from diverse backgrounds for a therapeutic art workshop.
The Canvas & Colors workshop, held earlier this week at Darul Islam, in Bonnyrigg suburb of Sydney, was led by Mariam Rababe of Mirror Cool Art.
It was part of Seena Incorporated’s Mind, Body & Soul women’s retreats.
“When we paint, we’re anchored in the moment — away from worries, away from noise — focused just on the colors in front of us,” said Mehar Ahmad of Seena Inc.
The workshop’s reference piece was the Dome of the Rock, a sacred site in Jerusalem.
Despite initial intimidation, attendees were reassured by Mariam’s guidance and encouragement.
“I want you to show yourself on the canvas,” Mariam said, as she led the group through each stage of the painting process.
With patience and encouragement, Mariam helped attendees bring their unique visions to life.
One participant said, “I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed the afternoon painting, reconnecting with myself in the process and all the lovely sisters.”
Another attendee said, “Thank you Seena for an amazing event. Well organized and welcoming — and the Mother’s Day treat and flower gifts were so lovely. I’m so glad I could attend. Thank you to the hosts, the artist, and for the lovely atmosphere and location. Much appreciated all your hard work and the very yummy food! I’ve already hung up my art at home.”
With attendees from diverse cultural backgrounds — including Indian, Pakistani, Cambodian, Lebanese, and recent arrivals from Palestine — Mariam conducted the workshop in both English and Arabic.
