Iraq launches its largest solar energy project
Groundbreaking solar energy initiative aims to boost energy security and sustainability
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) – Iraq has launched “Shams Basra,” the largest solar energy project in the country, marking a major step in its clean energy efforts.
The project is being developed in collaboration with Total Energy and aims to diversify Iraq’s energy sources while enhancing energy security.
The solar plant, located in Basra Governorate, will span approximately 9,000 acres in the Basra desert.
It will feature nearly two million solar panels across four generating units, each expected to produce 250 megawatts, for a total output of 1,000 megawatts of clean electricity once operational.
The Ministry of Electricity stated that the project aligns with Iraq’s strategic energy goals, particularly in reducing reliance on imported fuel and advancing sustainable energy solutions.
The initiative is part of Iraq’s broader vision to establish renewable energy infrastructure and promote environmental conservation.
Shams Basra is set to become a regional leader in renewable energy, setting a new benchmark for clean energy development and highlighting Iraq’s commitment to long-term energy sustainability.
