MOSCOW, Russia (MNTV) — Events marking World Hijab Day were held across Russia ahead of the Feb. 1 observance, particularly in regions with deep Islamic traditions.
The global initiative, which began as a campaign of solidarity and education, has gained wider resonance in Russia as a celebration of faith, family values and cultural heritage.
In Dagestan, the “Russia—My History” historical park in Makhachkala hosted a family-themed competition titled “Grandma, Mom, and Me.” The event was organized by the Women’s Education Department of the Muftiate of Dagestan in cooperation with the Hijabi community, the Maryam spiritual women’s center and the Gidayat educational center.
Five teams from across the republic took part in the competition, which focused on craftsmanship, household skills and creative expression, emphasizing intergenerational continuity and family harmony.
The team from the village of Rakhata in Botlikh district won first place, followed by teams from Teletl in Shamil district and Untsukul in Untsukul district.
Organizers said the event aimed to revive traditional Dagestani customs, strengthen family ties and instill respect for cultural and religious roots among younger generations.
In Tatarstan, a women’s gathering was held at the Islamic Center of the Akhmädzäki Mosque in Chistopol at the initiative of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Tatarstan. The program focused on promoting traditional spiritual values and moral awareness.
The event opened with a sermon by Milyaushi Shaidullina on the meaning and purpose of wearing the hijab.
Participants also heard from a nutritionist on dietary needs during Ramadan and took part in workshops on mehndi and headscarf styling.
World Hijab Day is observed annually to raise awareness about the hijab and promote understanding of its religious and cultural significance. In Islam, the hijab is regarded as an act of worship and an expression of modesty rooted in Quranic teachings.
