MINNEAPOLIS (MNTV) — The United States has expanded its official investigation of unidentified aerial phenomena — the government’s term for what were long called UFOs — marking a shift from decades of secrecy toward structured scrutiny, while stressing the effort is not evidence of extraterrestrial life.
The renewed attention follows the Trump administration’s decision to declassify hundreds of reports dating to the mid-20th century.
Among them is a 1948 case in Minnesota in which two children reported a metallic object that briefly landed before rapidly rising; an FBI agent documented marks on the ground, but the case was never resolved.
The files mostly record unexplained observations rather than verified evidence of advanced technology.
The policy shift has built over years. Congress held public hearings in 2022 and 2023, and the Defense Department created the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office to investigate objects that might pose security concerns.
A subsequent disclosure law required the review and release of relevant records. The Trump administration has continued the approach and created a White House scientific advisory council led by Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb to assess whether sightings represent foreign technology, sensor errors, or other security issues.
Officials say many incidents stay unexplained because the data is incomplete, not because they confirm extraordinary claims.
Public interest has intensified through films and advocacy groups pressing for disclosure.
Some researchers argue unresolved cases deserve rigorous scientific study; others caution that unexplained observations should not be presented as proof of alien intelligence without verifiable evidence.
The government’s focus has moved from dismissing sightings to documenting and analyzing them as potential intelligence or defense matters.
