US approves potential $500M HIMARS sale to Bahrain
Deal aims to strengthen Gulf ally’s defense capabilities and support regional security cooperation
MANAMA, Bahrain (MNTV) — The US State Department has approved a possible $500 million sale of M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and related equipment to Bahrain, the Pentagon announced.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of the proposed deal.
Under the request, Bahrain seeks to acquire four M142 HIMARS launchers, three International Field Artillery Tactical Data Systems, and a range of associated equipment.
The package includes M28A2 Low Cost Reduced Range Practice Rocket Pods, resupply vehicles, GPS receivers, simulators, communications gear, spare parts, as well as training, logistical support, and technical assistance.
According to the DSCA, the sale aligns with US foreign policy and national security objectives by bolstering the defense capabilities of a key non-NATO ally in the Middle East.
The agency said the systems will improve Bahrain’s ability to protect US installations and personnel, operate independently in defense of shared interests, and integrate more effectively into US-led coalition operations.
The DSCA emphasized that the transaction would not alter the regional military balance and that Bahrain is well-positioned to integrate the systems into its armed forces.
Lockheed Martin, headquartered in Grand Prairie, Texas, will serve as the principal contractor, with no offset agreement currently in place.
Implementation of the deal would involve deploying five US government personnel and ten contractor representatives for approximately four months to oversee equipment setup and provide operator and maintenance training.
Any offset arrangements may be determined in future negotiations between Bahrain and the contractor.
