UN rights office sends investigators to Lebanon over violations
Mission will assess alleged violations by all parties amid continued Israeli strikes and humanitarian crisis
BEIRUT, Lebanon (MNTV) – The UN human rights office will deploy an investigative team to Lebanon next week to examine alleged violations of international law by all sides in the ongoing conflict.
The move comes as continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon are reported to have caused significant civilian casualties and further destabilized the country.
UN human rights chief Volker Türk said the mission will be the first of its kind, tasked with documenting breaches of international humanitarian and human rights law and producing a comprehensive report on findings from the war zone.
The decision comes as Lebanon remains under sustained military pressure following months of Israeli air and ground operations that have devastated southern regions and repeatedly struck urban areas, despite a declared ceasefire that has failed to fully hold.
According to UN figures, more than 3,600 people have been killed in Israeli strikes on Lebanon, while over one million residents have been displaced from their homes.
Lebanese authorities also report nearly 3,500 Israeli strikes since the ceasefire announcement in April, underscoring what officials describe as a continued pattern of bombardment despite international calls for restraint.
Humanitarian conditions have sharply deteriorated, with the UN warning that nearly 1.24 million people face crisis or emergency levels of food insecurity, as infrastructure damage and displacement strain basic services.
The announcement coincided with another reported Israeli strike on the southern city of Sidon on Wednesday, where an AFP correspondent described an explosion followed by a burning vehicle and emergency responders rushing to the scene.
The UN mission is expected to evaluate conduct by all sides involved in the conflict and assess compliance with international legal standards, amid growing global concern over the widening regional war and its impact on civilians in Lebanon.
