UN expert calls for end to double standards against ICC
UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers Margaret Satterthwaite has urged an end to “double standards” against the ICC
NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) – UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers Margaret Satterthwaite has urged an end to “double standards” against the International Criminal Court (ICC), after the US sanctioned its officials for issuing arrest warrants for Israeli leaders accused of war crimes in Gaza.
“If every person is equal before the law, the actions of the ICC demonstrate that the same is true for both victims and alleged perpetrators,” Satterthwaite told reporters at UN headquarters. “It’s time to end the double standards — international justice exists or it does not.”
She said threats and sanctions against the ICC “promote a culture of impunity” and interfere with judicial independence and human rights work, calling such measures “incompatible with international law.”
Satterthwaite urged all states “to respect the court’s independence as a judicial institution and protect the impartiality of all those who work there.”
In August, the US imposed sanctions on four ICC officials, including a judge who approved warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
Earlier in February, President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing financial and visa restrictions on ICC staff and anyone assisting probes into war crimes by the US or its allies, including Israel.
