Uganda, Nigeria bolster military cooperation with high-level visit
Nigerian Army War College delegation tours Uganda to strengthen Pan-African defense ties, boost knowledge sharing
MBUYA, Uganda (MNTV) — The Uganda Peoples’ Defense Forces (UPDF) and the Nigerian Army have pledged to deepen military cooperation during a visit by a 30-member delegation from the Nigerian Army War College, signaling a shared commitment to regional security and Pan-African unity.
Led by Major General Umar Alkali, Commandant of the War College, the Nigerian delegation was received at the Ministry of Defense and Veteran Affairs Headquarters in Mbuya.
The team is on a regional study tour aimed at learning from Uganda’s defense capabilities, peacekeeping experience, and training programs.
Major General Jack Bakasumba, Chief of Joint Staff of the UPDF, welcomed the visitors and emphasized the longstanding relationship between the two militaries.
He credited Uganda’s military strength to President Yoweri Museveni’s Pan-African vision and stressed the need for African-led solutions to security threats.
“We have built a solid capacity to train our forces and carry out operations, thanks to our President’s Pan-African spirit,” Bakasumba said. “We do not share borders with Somalia, but because of our ideological clarity and willpower, we do not rely on foreigners to fight for us.”
The visit was also attended by senior UPDF officials, including Major General Richard Otto, Chief of Intelligence and Security, who reaffirmed Uganda’s role in regional peacebuilding efforts.
“The UPDF remains committed to providing security and to peacekeeping missions,” Otto noted.
Maj Gen Alkali expressed gratitude for Uganda’s hospitality and commended the UPDF’s professionalism and regional engagement.
“It is a great honor and privilege to be hosted here. We have learned a lot, and tours like this are vital for us,” he said.
Other UPDF leaders present at the meeting included Maj Gen Don Nabasa, Maj Gen Felix Kulayigye, Brig Gen Godwin Karugaba, Brig Gen Wycliffe Keita, and Nigeria’s Defense Attaché to Uganda, Col DM Bozegah.
The visit highlighted a growing alliance between Uganda and Nigeria, aimed at enhancing mutual understanding, regional defense cooperation, and the pursuit of sustainable security across Africa.
