UAE raises minimum wage for Emiratis in private sector
New policy boosts monthly pay to $1,633, strengthens workforce participation and enforces strict compliance from employers
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (MNTV) — The United Arab Emirates has raised the minimum monthly salary for Emirati citizens working in the private sector to 6,000 dirhams ($1,633), effective from January 1, 2026, as part of measures to enhance economic security for nationals.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization said the increase applies to all Emirati employees in private companies and covers the issuance, renewal and modification of work permits, including two-year permits, replacing the previous minimum salary of 5,000 dirhams ($1,361).
Under the new rules, companies that fail to meet the minimum wage requirement will face strict penalties, including a suspension on issuing new work permits, renewing existing permits or making any amendments from the start of 2026.
Authorities have granted employers a grace period until June 30, 2026, to adjust salaries in line with the policy, with financial penalties set to take effect from July 1 for continued non-compliance.
The ministry said an advanced digital monitoring system has been introduced to ensure enforcement, with companies receiving automated alerts through smart applications and electronic communication channels.
Officials said the decision aims to guarantee fair wages, improve working conditions and encourage greater participation of Emirati citizens in the private sector workforce.
