UAE firm launches sustainable building material from palm biomass
DesertBoard unveils Palm Strand Board at Saudi Wood Expo 2025, aligning with Vision 2030 goals
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (MNTV) — DesertBoard, a UAE-based company specializing in eco-friendly construction solutions, has introduced Palm Strand Board (PSB), a new building material produced from regenerated date palm biomass.
According to the Sustainability Online, the firm unveiled PSB at the Saudi Wood Expo 2025 in Riyadh, highlighting palm waste as an abundant yet underutilized resource in the Middle East.
Saudi Arabia alone generates more than 300,000 tonnes of palm fronds annually, which DesertBoard says can be transformed into sustainable alternatives to conventional materials.
Company director Kamal Farah described palm waste as “a unique opportunity” for the region, noting that PSB can drive low-carbon construction, local job creation, and innovative design solutions.
The initiative also supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives of promoting circular economy practices, localizing manufacturing, and cutting environmental impact.
Research conducted in July 2025 in partnership with Abu Dhabi University confirmed PSB’s performance advantages.
The study, led by Dr. Mai El-Basel and Dr. Omar Chaalal, found that the boards outperform conventional MDF and plywood in moisture resistance, compressive strength, insulation, and durability.
Dr. Chaalal said the findings demonstrate PSB’s potential not only for construction but also as a material suited to the Gulf’s hot, arid conditions. “It meets and exceeds benchmarks in durability, warping resistance, and resistance to moisture and heat,” he noted.
DesertBoard has already supplied more than 1,300 PSB panels for a cultural project titled On Weaving, a modular prayer pavilion at Jeddah’s Western Hajj Terminal, designed by East Architecture Studio with artists and engineers.
Farah said the project reflects the company’s mission of combining local resources, sustainable principles, and architectural heritage in forward-looking ways.
