Oman to establish green ship recycling yard in northern region
Joint venture with Jordanian partner to dismantle over 70 vessels annually
MUSCAT, Oman (MNTV) — Oman announced plans to develop an integrated green ship recycling facility in the country’s northern region, marking a significant step toward sustainable maritime practices.
The project will be established as a joint venture between the Omani government and a Jordanian partner, with the capacity to dismantle more than 70 ships each year.
According to the Oman Observer, the officials said the initiative reflects growing regional efforts to reduce environmental impact and strengthen the circular economy.
Other Middle Eastern nations are pursuing similar ventures. Earlier this year, shipping giant Maersk signed a memorandum of understanding with Egypt to explore the creation of a green ship recycling yard at Damietta port, west of Port Said, as part of Cairo’s strategy to lessen dependence on imported scrap metal.
The Omani facility will comply with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, ensuring higher standards of worker safety and environmental protection.
