Turkmenistan among world’s soberest countries
Central Asian nations show low alcohol consumption due to deep and sustained influence of Islamic traditions
ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan (MNTV) — Turkmenistan ranks among the world’s least alcohol-consuming countries, with citizens averaging just 0.3 liters of pure alcohol per person annually, according to data from the World Population Review reported by IslamNews.
Other Central Asian nations also show low consumption: Tajikistan 0.7 liters, Uzbekistan 2.1 liters, Kyrgyzstan 3.9 liters, and Kazakhstan 5.4 liters, reflecting the influence of Islamic cultural traditions.
By contrast, Eastern and Central European countries lead global consumption. Romania tops the list with 17.1 liters per capita, followed by Georgia at 15.5 liters and Latvia at 14.7 liters. Among CIS countries, Moldova consumes 14.1 liters, Belarus 11.4 liters, and Russia 10.5 liters.
In July 2025, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov approved a National Program for the Prevention of the Harmful Effects of Alcohol for 2025–2028, aiming to improve citizens’ physical and spiritual health, enhance well-being, and increase life expectancy.
