Türkiye, Iraq renew security cooperation for trade corridor
Security coordination resumes after Iraq’s election period, with focus on counterterrorism efforts and protecting a major regional trade route
ANKARA, Türkiye (MNTV) – Türkiye and Iraq are moving to strengthen security cooperation as the two countries prepare to resume high-level discussions aimed at addressing regional threats and safeguarding the planned Development Road project.
Officials familiar with the talks said the dialogue had slowed during Iraq’s recent electoral process but is now expected to regain momentum in the coming months. Both governments are seeking closer coordination on security issues that affect regional stability and economic connectivity.
The Development Road project, a multi-billion-dollar transport and trade corridor linking the Gulf region with Europe through Iraqi and Turkish territory, has become a central focus of the discussions. Authorities from both countries view security along the route as essential for the project’s success.
Turkish officials believe Baghdad has adopted a more active position toward militant threats operating in northern Iraq, recognizing that such groups pose challenges to Iraq’s own security and development objectives in addition to Türkiye’s concerns.
During upcoming meetings, Ankara is expected to call for stronger action against militant presence in areas including Kandil, Sinjar and parts of Sulaymaniyah province. A visit by a senior Iraqi delegation is anticipated as both sides work to expand existing consultation mechanisms.
The cooperation framework also includes the activation of joint security structures established under agreements reached last year. These include a Security Coordination Center in Baghdad and a Training and Cooperation Center in Bashiqa.
As part of the arrangement, Turkish military personnel will provide training to Iraqi security forces in areas such as intelligence gathering, reconnaissance, operational planning and combat coordination, with the aim of enhancing Iraq’s ability to confront armed groups and maintain stability.
