Tunis court issues lengthy sentences in security case
Appeals judges hand down five- to 45-year prison terms to dozens accused of plotting against state authority
TUNIS, Tunisia (MNTV) — A Tunisian appeals court has upheld sweeping prison sentences for 40 political, business and media figures on charges of conspiring against state security, marking one of the country’s most expansive security prosecutions in recent years.
State media reported Friday that the defendants received terms ranging from five to 45 years following months of proceedings.
Authorities said the group had been on trial since March, while more than 20 additional suspects fled the country during the investigation.
Local broadcaster Mosaique FM cited officials confirming the appeal judgment, which finalizes the sentences linked to what prosecutors call the “conspiracy against the state” case.
Earlier this year, nearly 40 defendants — many known critics of President Kais Saied — were handed prison terms of up to 66 years on charges that included undermining state security and affiliation with a terrorist organization.
Rights organizations have denounced the process, arguing the case reflects an escalation in politically driven prosecutions.
