Trump urges Apple to rename Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum says a change on Apple’s maps could come soon after Trump contacted the company directly amid escalating US-Canada trade tensions
WASHINGTON (MNTV) — US President Donald Trump has directly urged Apple to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” on its digital maps, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Monday.
“The president reached out to Apple directly, so I’m sure that we may be seeing that change coming up soon,” Burgum told Fox Business.
Apple did not immediately respond to Burgum’s remarks.
The request follows an executive order Trump signed Aug. 27 directing US federal agencies to officially refer to the lake, which is shared by New York state and the Canadian province of Ontario, as Lake America.
The dispute over the lake’s name comes amid an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada, with Washington imposing 50 percent tariffs on key Canadian goods.
Google has already updated its Maps service to display “Lake America” to users in the United States while retaining “Lake Ontario” for users in Canada. Users outside the two countries see both names as “Lake Ontario (Lake America).”
Trump made a similar move shortly after returning to the White House for a second term in January 2025, ordering the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the Gulf of America for US federal purposes.
Google Maps subsequently adopted “Gulf of America” for users in the United States while continuing to display “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico. Users elsewhere see both names.
