Iran says it attacked 4 oil tankers in Arabian Gulf, warns US of further strikes
Iran's Revolutionary Guard says four vessels were targeted for using unauthorized maritime routes and warns that US military bases could face retaliation
According to an IRGC statement, the ships were conducting ship-to-ship oil transfers when they were identified and struck simultaneously.
The Revolutionary Guard said fires continued to burn aboard the vessels following the attacks.
The claims could not be independently verified, and the statement did not identify the ships or provide details about possible casualties.
The IRGC also accused Washington of encouraging commercial vessels to navigate waters containing naval mines, claiming the practice was contributing to a rise in maritime incidents.
It warned that continued US involvement could trigger an expanded Iranian military response, including strikes against American bases across the region.
The latest developments come amid renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States following the collapse of an earlier ceasefire.
The US and Israel launched military attacks against Iran on Feb. 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israel and American military installations in the region.
Although a ceasefire was reached in April, tensions resurfaced as diplomatic negotiations stalled, despite Washington and Tehran signing a memorandum of understanding in June.
The US resumed strikes on Iranian targets on July 8. Four days later, Tehran announced it was closing the Strait of Hormuz again, further disrupting one of the world’s most important maritime routes for oil shipments.
