“The Road to Webequie”: From Film to Reality
For movie enthusiasts, the name ‘Webequie’ is likely to evoke memories of the acclaimed Canadian film “The Road to Webequie,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2016 and was nominated for Best Short Documentary Film. While it did not win an award at the time, it is making headlines today for its real-world impact.
On October 29, news emerged that Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Minister of Indigenous Affairs and First Nations Economic Development Greg Rickford, and Webequie First Nation Chief Cornelius Wabasse had signed a Community Partnership Agreement. This development is expected to initiate the construction of the long-awaited road connecting Webequie to the Northern Ontario “Ring of Fire” region, an area renowned for its significant potential for critical minerals essential for developing clean energy technologies.
This project is a collaborative effort between the Webequie First Nation and the Ontario government, with construction anticipated to begin in June 2026, pending necessary approvals and consultations.
Chief Cornelius Wabasse stated that the planned Supply Road will serve as a vital logistical pathway for the Webequie community, allowing them to access their natural resources and foster economic resilience.
Currently, Webequie lands can only be accessed by air or a winter road, both of which present challenges. The community’s only airport is in urgent need of repairs following a fire that severely damaged the facility, and the winter road is becoming shorter each year due to climate change.
According to the terms of the agreement, the province of Ontario will provide Webequie First Nation with approximately $40 million to assist in rebuilding its airport terminal, constructing a community centre with a multi-use arena, and investing in resources and equipment for the proposed road. Chief Wabasse emphasises that this deal will also provide crucial resources to establish an urgently needed mental health support system within the Webequie community.
