Syria says it takes over another US base
Defense ministry says Al-Shadadi base taken after US pullback, following Al-Tanf handover amid shifting coalition dynamics
DAMASCUS, Syria (MNTV) — Syria’s defense ministry said government forces have taken control of the Al-Shadadi military base in the country’s northeast, marking another handover following the recent withdrawal of US forces from strategic facilities.
In a statement, the ministry said Syrian Arab Army units assumed control of the base in Hasakah province after coordination with the American side. The facility had been used by US-led coalition forces operating against the Daesh militant group.
Al-Shadadi is located near a town that previously housed a detention facility where Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) held suspected Daesh members. Syrian government forces advanced into the area last month as security arrangements evolved following political changes in Damascus.
The announcement comes days after Washington confirmed it had vacated the Al-Tanf base near Syria’s borders with Jordan and Iraq. Al-Tanf had been a key strategic outpost for US and coalition operations in the region.
The SDF, once Washington’s primary local partner against Daesh, played a central role in defeating the group’s territorial control in Syria in 2019.
However, following the fall of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, US policy has shifted toward engagement with Syria’s new authorities, with officials indicating the previous reliance on Kurdish forces had diminished.
Despite the collapse of Daesh’s territorial caliphate, the group remains active in parts of Syria. The US Central Command said its forces carried out more than 30 strikes on Daesh positions this month, targeting infrastructure and weapons storage facilities between February 3 and February 12.
Security analysts say the transfer of bases could signal a broader realignment of military and political arrangements in northeastern Syria, with implications for regional stability and counterterrorism efforts.
