Saudi hospital performs robotic bowel surgery on child
Specialists successfully treat rare congenital condition using advanced robotic-assisted procedure requiring high precision in complex pediatric case
JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (MNTV) — King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah has successfully performed a robotic-assisted bowel surgery on a two-year-old child, marking a significant advancement in pediatric surgical care.
The child, weighing approximately 10 kilograms, had been diagnosed with Hirschsprung’s disease — a congenital disorder that disrupts normal bowel movement and can cause severe constipation and intestinal blockage.
Doctors carried out a Soave pull-through procedure, a highly delicate operation in young patients due to the limited space within the pelvis and the close positioning of critical nerves, muscles, and blood vessels involved in bowel function.
The hospital said the use of robotic technology allowed surgeons to achieve enhanced visualization and greater precision during the operation, reducing risks to surrounding tissues and improving overall outcomes.
The procedure involved removing the diseased section of the colon and reconnecting the healthy part to restore normal digestive function.
Medical experts noted that such surgeries demand exceptional accuracy, particularly in pediatric cases, where even minor errors can affect long-term function.
