Palestinian Envoy to Canada Urges More Action from Carney!
August 18, 2026. Ottawa. Feda Abdelhady, the first Palestinian Ambassador to Ottawa following Canada’s official recognition of the State of Palestine by Prime Minister Mark Carney on September 21, 2025, described this recognition as “pivotal” for her people. However, she emphasized that Canada can and must do more to end Israel’s occupation of Palestine.
“My message to Canadians is that they have a role in giving hope to the Palestinian people,” said Abdelhady.
In her first feature interview since assuming her position earlier this summer, Abdelhady told the press in Ottawa on August 17, 2026, that Canada needs greater consistency and coherence in its policy toward Palestine and Israel.
Reacting to a shocking statement made during a podcast by Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who called for the killing of “30 to 40” Palestinians in Gaza each night, as well as the death penalty law passed by the Israeli Knesset targeting Palestinian activists, Abdelhady remarked, “I come to Canada at perhaps the darkest chapter in the history of the Palestinian people. But I also come to Canada with hope.”
She pointed out that Israeli policies are designed to make life for Palestinians so unbearable that they are forced to leave, highlighting several instances of Israeli government statements about resettling Palestinians and appropriating their land for Israeli use.
“It’s a system of occupation, a system of apartheid, a system of genocide,” she stated.
While urging Canada to commit itself to building self-governing institutions for her people, Abdelhady also insisted that Canada must impose consequences on Israel. This includes suspending trade agreements that allow the import of goods from occupied Palestinian territory, which she referred to as “stolen goods,” as well as military exports used against Palestinians.
Regarding the issue of West Bank settlers, Abdelhady warned that the Israeli government will continue to embolden these encroachers and perpetrators of violence unless it faces sanctions as a whole, rather than just targeting select individuals.
“This entire Israeli occupation regime—governmental, military, and settler militias—functions together,” she said. “It funds, enables, facilitates, and protects these settlers.”
About the New Ambassador: Feda Musa Zaid Abdelhady officially assumed her duties as the Chief Representative of the Palestinian General Delegation to Canada on June 11, 2026. She and her parents were among the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced after the occupation of their homeland by Israel in 1967.
Abdelhady began her diplomatic career at Palestine’s Mission to the UN in New York in 1992. She served as Deputy Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the UN from May 2013 to May 2026, holding the rank of Ambassador. Before this role, she served in various capacities, including First Counselor, Special Adviser to the Foreign Minister, First Secretary, and Special Assistant to the Ambassador.
