Palestinian detainee dies in Israeli custody after Israeli abuse
22-year-old Ahmad Khdeirat becomes 78th prisoner to die in Israeli detention since Gaza war began in October 2023
TEL AVIV, Israel (MNTV) — A young Palestinian detainee held without charge has died in Israeli custody, becoming the 78th prisoner to die since the start of the Gaza genocide, according to Palestinian rights groups.
The Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Committee and the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society confirmed that 22-year-old Ahmad Khdeirat died in an Israeli hospital after his health sharply deteriorated during imprisonment.
Khdeirat, a resident of Adh-Dhahiriya near Hebron, had been detained since May 23, 2024, under Israel’s administrative detention system, which enforces imprisonment without charge or trial for renewable six-month terms.
The Prisoner’s Society accused Israeli authorities of “deliberate medical negligence,” noting that Khdeirat suffered from diabetes prior to his detention and later contracted scabies in the Negev prison, notorious for harsh conditions.
His health reportedly worsened due to repeated hunger episodes, severe drops in blood sugar, and a 40-kilogram weight loss.
Palestinian organizations say the case highlights systemic abuse within Israel’s prison network. Rights group Addameer reports that 11,100 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons and detention centers, including 3,544 under administrative detention, 400 children, and 53 women.
Human rights advocates have long criticized Israel’s use of so-called administrative detention, arguing that it violates international law and is used to suppress political activism and dissent in occupied territories.
