Abu Dhabi’s ADQ, US join $1.8 billion minerals fund
Consortium with Orion Resource Partners to secure global supply chains for critical minerals and processing projects
ABU DHABI, UAE (MNTV) — Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund ADQ has joined hands with the US government and Orion Resource Partners LP to establish a $1.8 billion fund focused on developing critical mineral supply chains, a move seen as bolstering energy transition efforts and strategic resource security.
The new platform, called the Orion Critical Minerals Consortium (Orion CMC), unites Orion—a global investment firm specializing in metals and materials—with the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), the American government’s international investment arm. Together, the three parties aim to strengthen supply networks for essential minerals across the US and partner nations.
According to a joint statement, the DFC has made an initial capital commitment that has been equally matched by funds managed by both ADQ and Orion, bringing the total to $1.8 billion. The consortium targets an eventual fund size of $5 billion.
Led by Orion, the group will invest in and develop critical mineral assets in emerging and established markets. It will focus on securing offtake agreements, establishing domestic processing capacity, and advancing cost-effective mineral technology solutions.
Orion CMC plans to prioritize investments in existing or near-production projects to accelerate supply chain resilience for minerals vital to renewable energy, electric vehicles, and advanced manufacturing sectors.
The partnership reinforces ADQ’s growing role in sustainable investment strategies and highlights deepening cooperation between Abu Dhabi and Washington on critical resource development.
