Muslim family assaulted by mob after road accident in India
Family says attackers dragged them from car, shouted anti-Muslim slogans, looted belongings and vandalized vehicle as police personnel allegedly failed to intervene
NEW DELHI, India (MNTV) — A Muslim family was allegedly dragged from their car and assaulted by a mob following a road accident in northern India, with attackers reportedly telling them to “go to Pakistan” in an apparent Islamophobic attack.
The violence erupted in Rewari district of Haryana state after the family’s car collided with a bus. What began as a traffic accident allegedly escalated into a communal assault as a crowd surrounded the vehicle and attacked its occupants.
According to the family, members were pulled from the car and beaten while attackers hurled anti-Muslim abuse and shouted slogans including “Chase away mullahs to Pakistan,” using a term commonly referring to Muslim religious clerics but frequently deployed as an anti-Muslim slur in India.
Footage of the aftermath circulated widely on social media, bringing the incident to public attention and prompting demands for an investigation.
“We were beaten mercilessly by a mob while they kept abusing us,” an elderly member of the family can be heard saying in the footage. “They took our belongings, including cash and a suitcase.”
The family also accused the attackers of vandalizing their vehicle and stealing cash and other possessions during the violence.
They further alleged that police personnel were present but did not intervene despite repeated pleas for assistance.
“I kept calling the police personnel present at the scene for help and intervention, but they didn’t even care to respond,” the elderly man said.
There was no immediate confirmation from authorities whether police had registered a criminal case or arrested anyone over the attack. Rewari police had yet to publicly respond to allegations that officers witnessed the violence without intervening.
The incident has fueled criticism online over both anti-Muslim mob violence and the alleged failure of law enforcement officers to protect the family.
Muslims in India have increasingly faced harassment, hate speech and mob attacks amid the rise of Hindu majoritarian politics over the past decade. Rights groups have repeatedly warned that anti-Muslim rhetoric and impunity for perpetrators have contributed to an increasingly hostile environment for the country’s largest religious minority.
