Morocco joins global AI initiative on intellectual property systems

AGADIR, Morocco (MNTV) — Morocco has joined a new global initiative on artificial intelligence and intellectual property, positioning itself as an active participant in shaping international digital governance and innovation frameworks.

The initiative, launched by the World Intellectual Property Organization, introduces the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Interchange (AIII), a platform designed to facilitate global dialogue on the technical challenges posed by AI in intellectual property systems.

Morocco was represented at the launch by Amal Al-Falah Al-Sagroshni, Minister of Digital Transition and Administration Reform, who highlighted the country’s focus on advancing research, innovation, and digital transformation.

She pointed to national programs such as “AI Made in Morocco,” aimed at supporting startups, businesses, and research institutions in developing locally driven artificial intelligence solutions.

The AIII initiative is intended to bring together policymakers, technology experts, creators, and intellectual property holders to exchange knowledge and explore practical solutions to challenges created by AI technologies. 

Rather than setting legal standards, the platform focuses on technical and operational tools to manage ownership and rights.

Key areas of discussion include the use of watermarking, metadata systems, digital identifiers, and content recognition technologies to help distinguish between human-generated and AI-generated works, while improving traceability and rights protection.

To support these efforts, WIPO plans to establish a technical exchange network composed of experts from academia, the private sector, and civil society. The network will contribute to identifying solutions for emerging issues in AI-related infrastructure and intellectual property management.

Moroccan officials emphasized the importance of international cooperation in developing responsible AI systems, stressing the need for transparency, protection of digital rights, and alignment with sustainable development goals.

The initiative reflects growing global concern over how rapidly evolving AI technologies are challenging traditional frameworks of ownership and creativity, prompting countries like Morocco to engage more actively in shaping future policy discussions.
