Morocco claims first-ever U-20 World Cup title in Chile
Historic 2-0 win over Argentina marks Kingdom’s maiden global football triumph, fueling national pride and continental recognition
RABAT, Morocco (MNTV) — Morocco made history by winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup for the first time, defeating Argentina 2-0 in a stunning final held in Santiago, Chile.
The victory marks the Kingdom’s first world title in any football category and cements Morocco’s growing prominence in global sports.
The Atlas Lions’ triumph was driven by standout forward Yassir Zabiri, who scored both goals — the first from a brilliant free kick in the 12th minute and the second from an Othmane Maamma assist in the 29th.
Despite Argentina’s dominant 71 percent possession and attacking strength, Morocco maintained composure with disciplined defending and sharp counterattacks, controlling the tempo to secure the historic win.
Following the final, King Mohammed VI congratulated the team, praising their “heroic and deserved victory” and highlighting their “cohesion, discipline, and professionalism.” He lauded the players and coaching staff for honoring Morocco and representing Africa with distinction.
Nationwide celebrations erupted across Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Fez, Laayoune, and Tangier, as thousands of fans filled the streets waving flags, singing, and celebrating late into the night.
With this win, Morocco becomes only the second African nation — after Ghana in 2009 — to lift the U-20 World Cup trophy, reinforcing the continent’s growing influence in world football.
