Alvin Tedjo Wins the Mississauga Mayoral Race!
What a difference a week makes in politics. Last week’s voters’ poll by Liaison Strategies found Crombie leading with 35 percent among decided and leaning voters, followed by Tedjo (31 percent) and Parrish (28 percent). Damerla was in a distant fourth.
Even as recently as this morning, the top 3 candidates’ positions had not changed and stood at: “Crombie (26 percent), Tedjo (25 percent), and Parrish (22 percent), with 16 percent still undecided.”
Roughly 12 hours later, at 8:45 pm this evening, the news broke of a major upset:
“Mississauga, please welcome your brand-new mayor, Alvin Tedjo!”
Results: The city posted unofficial results showing Tedjo leading the race with 63,508 votes as of 8:45 pm Monday. Incumbent Mayor Carolyn Parrish has received 45,178 votes, while former Mississauga mayor and Ontario Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie received 37,477 votes.
So, who is Alvin Tedjo? The 41-year-old father of three has been the Ward 2 councilor since 2022. This was his second bid for Mississauga’s top job. He finished second to Carolyn Parrish in the 2024 mayoral by-election, securing 25 percent of the vote compared with Parrish’s 31 percent.
His victory signals a significant generational shift for a municipality that has overwhelmingly favored veteran politicians for decades, most notably during the late Hazel McCallion’s 36-year tenure.
Tedjo repeatedly called for a leadership change at City Hall, arguing that Mississauga needed a new approach after years under Crombie and Parrish. His campaign focused heavily on rising property taxes and concerns about municipal spending.
Tedjo’s top promise: He will implement a two-year city-wide residential property tax freeze on the city’s portion of the bill. He’s also promised to increase the property tax rebate for seniors and to make city programs more affordable and accessible for families.
Results are still coming in, and we will do our best to bring you the most complete information in our next newsletter, as soon as we have confirmed numbers in hand, Insha’Allah.
