Mexico escalates protection efforts for citizens aboard Gaza aid flotilla
Mexico has announced an urgent escalation of efforts to safeguard Mexican citizens involved in an international humanitarian mission to Gaza
MEXICO CITY, Mexico (MNTV) – Mexico’s Foreign Ministry has announced an urgent escalation of efforts to safeguard Mexican citizens involved in an international humanitarian mission to Gaza after Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla in international waters, triggering diplomatic tension and global concern.
Acting under instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum, the ministry said it is intensifying protection measures for Mexican nationals aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy carrying humanitarian aid toward the blockaded Gaza Strip.
Mexican diplomats have maintained continuous contact with families of participants while coordinating with embassies and consulates across the region to monitor developments and provide consular protection amid rising uncertainty.
Mexico issued a direct demand for Israel to guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of its citizens, ensure immediate access to consular assistance, and fully comply with international humanitarian and human rights law.
The flotilla was intercepted by Israeli forces on April 29 in international waters near Crete, approximately 600 nautical miles from Gaza. According to reports, Israeli forces boarded multiple vessels and detained activists, with 177 people taken into custody.
The ministry confirmed that one Mexican participant was returned to Mexico City on May 2 following diplomatic intervention. Six other Mexican nationals remain in contact with authorities and are reported in stable condition, though concerns remain over their treatment and legal status.
Allegations have emerged of mistreatment during detention, including reports that activists were subjected to severe interrogation conditions. The situation unfolds against the backdrop of Israel’s blockade of Gaza since 2007, which humanitarian organizations say has pushed more than 2 million residents into extreme deprivation.
The crisis has intensified following the military campaign launched in October 2023, which has left Gaza facing catastrophic destruction and mass civilian casualties, drawing widespread international condemnation.
