Mamdani calls El-Sayed’s Senate bid ‘critical’ for New York
New York City mayor tied El-Sayed's Michigan campaign to shared agenda of economic justice, Medicare for All and curbing wealthy donors' influence
NEW YORK (MNTV) – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called the election of Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed a matter of “critical importance” to New York, linking his campaign to a national movement focused on economic justice, affordable health care and reducing the influence of wealthy donors.
Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, Mamdani defended his support for El-Sayed after being asked about a fundraiser he attended for the candidate this month, saying their movements share a commitment to putting working people at the center of government.
He highlighted El-Sayed’s priorities — removing money from politics, raising financial security for ordinary Americans and establishing Medicare for All — and argued they resonate in both Michigan and New York.
El-Sayed faces Trump-backed Republican Mike Rogers in a contest that could influence control of the Senate; polling cited by the mayor’s allies gives El-Sayed a narrow lead.
El-Sayed has also drawn attention for telling ABC News that Israel is “not actually our friend,” adding foreign policy to a campaign otherwise centered on health care and economic inequality.
