Maldives to launch AI-driven education reform
Government unveils ambitious digital-first education overhaul, placing artificial intelligence and teacher upskilling at core of long-term reform push
MALÉ, Maldives (MNTV) — Maldives is preparing to launch what officials describe as a transformative overhaul of its education system, positioning artificial intelligence and digital governance as central pillars of a long-term national strategy to modernize learning and workforce readiness.
The education sector master plan, expected to be rolled out in the first quarter of this year, is designed to align classrooms with the country’s broader digital transformation agenda, signalling a shift from incremental reform to system-wide restructuring.
Education Minister Ismail Shafeeu said the upcoming plan marks a decisive move to future-proof education by embedding digital competence across teaching, leadership and curriculum development. Rather than treating technology as an add-on, the strategy reframes it as foundational to how education is delivered.
At the center of the reform is a push to create a digitally fluent teaching workforce capable of using emerging tools — including artificial intelligence — to improve learning outcomes. Officials say teacher upskilling has been treated as strategic infrastructure, comparable in importance to physical school facilities.
The master plan also reflects a broader ambition: to ensure students graduate with skills relevant to a rapidly evolving digital economy. Education authorities say integrating AI into teaching practices will allow more adaptive learning methods while preparing students for technology-driven professions.
As part of the initiative, Maldives is working with international partners including UNICEF, reinforcing the government’s view that education reform is inseparable from national development and social resilience.
Officials argue that investing in teachers’ digital leadership will have long-term societal impact, strengthening innovation capacity and reducing future skills gaps. The government has also indicated that educator wellbeing and continuous professional development will remain central to sustaining the reforms.
Analysts see the master plan as one of the most ambitious education policy shifts undertaken by Maldives in recent years, reflecting how small island states are increasingly using digital transformation and artificial intelligence to leapfrog structural limitations and compete in a global knowledge economy.
