Maldives launches national AI lab under digital transformation push
Maldives pushes AI-driven governance and digital reforms through new national lab aimed at modernizing services across islands
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — Maldives on Monday launched a national artificial intelligence and data platform aimed at modernizing public services, improving governance and expanding the country’s digital infrastructure as the tourism-dependent island nation accelerates efforts to build a technology-driven economy.
The National AI and Data Competency Center, also known as the Maldives AI Lab, was established through a partnership between technology firm MindCo and the Bank of Maldives (BML), with officials describing it as a national platform designed to guide the country’s use of artificial intelligence and data technologies.
The launch comes as governments across Asia and the Global South increasingly invest in AI systems to improve public administration, strengthen economic competitiveness and reduce dependence on traditional service-based models.
Maldives has in recent years pushed to digitize state services and improve technological connectivity beyond the capital, Male, where access to digital infrastructure remains uneven.
Officials said the AI lab would focus on improving citizen services, strengthening institutional governance and developing local expertise in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and data systems.
The platform was launched during the opening of CoLab 26, a four-day national program bringing together senior government officials, software developers, technical experts and private businesses to discuss how Maldives should regulate and integrate AI technologies into state institutions and key sectors of the economy.
According to organizers, the first half of the program will focus on identifying areas where AI can be deployed to improve governance and public services, while the remaining sessions will include hackathons and technical workshops aimed at developing locally adapted digital solutions.
MindCo Managing Director Saeeda Umar said the initiative was intended to help Maldives develop technology systems suited to local institutions and cultural realities rather than relying entirely on imported digital models.
She said the creation of a dedicated national center for AI and data technologies reflected growing recognition that emerging technologies would play a major role in shaping Maldives’ next phase of economic and administrative development.
Analysts say Maldives’ broader digital transition will depend on long-term investment in cybersecurity, technical education, internet accessibility and regulatory safeguards as governments worldwide face increasing scrutiny over data privacy, surveillance and ethical use of AI technologies.
