Maldives launches fully digital immigration system with e-Visa rollout
The new digital platform marks a milestone in Maldives’ public service reform, streamlining visa processes nationwide
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — The Maldives has fully digitized its immigration services with the launch of a new Electronic Visa (e-Visa) platform and mobile application, marking a major step in the island nation’s digital governance drive.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the e-Visa system on Monday at a ceremony held at Barcelo Nasandhura in Malé, calling it a transformative development that simplifies visa access and improves efficiency.
Before the new platform, visa applications were paper-based or semi-digital, still requiring in-person appointments for document verification. The e-Visa system now allows applicants to complete the entire process online — from submission to approval — eliminating the need for physical visits.
Immigration Controller Ahmed Faseeh said the service was designed to meet “international standards” and match the user experience of developed nations. “This service represents a major expansion in line with global benchmarks,” he said, adding that it reflects the government’s commitment to digital transformation.
Developed by Maldives Immigration, the system integrates multiple visa services into one web and mobile platform. Users can apply, track, and download their visas electronically. Each approved e-Visa carries a QR code for instant authentication and verification.
Authorities said the service will be open to the public from November 23, covering a range of visa categories including work, residence, and dependent permits.
Analysts say the initiative reflects the Maldives’ broader “Digital Maldives” and “Smart Government” agendas, which aim to strengthen efficiency and transparency across public institutions. The government has already implemented several e-services — from digital passports to online tax portals — as part of its long-term modernization strategy.
Officials said the e-Visa rollout will improve accessibility for foreign workers, reduce administrative delays, and enhance national border management.
