ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar (MNTV) — Madagascar’s military leader, Col. Michael Randrianirina, was sworn in as president on Friday before the High Constitutional Court in the capital, Antananarivo.
“I will fully, completely, and justly fulfill the high responsibilities of my position as president of the Republic of Madagascar,” Randrianirina declared during the ceremony.
“I swear to exercise the power entrusted to me and dedicate all my strength to defending and strengthening national unity and human rights.”
His inauguration comes after weeks of protests over severe water and power shortages that left more than 20 people dead and about 100 injured.
The unrest ultimately forced former President Andry Rajoelina to flee the country earlier this week amid mounting calls for his impeachment.
