Mothin Ali launches Green Party deputy leadership bid to amplify northern, working-class voices
LEEDS, UK (MNTV) – Mothin Ali, the Green Party councillor for Leeds’ Gipton and Harehills ward, has declared his candidacy for deputy leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, reports Hyphen.
Ali, who was elected in May 2024, is campaigning to reshape the party’s image, aiming to broaden its appeal beyond its traditional southern, middle-class base.
He emphasizes the need for a leader who resonates with working-class communities and can engage effectively on the doorstep.
Ali’s platform focuses on opposing austerity measures, challenging divisive rhetoric from parties like Reform U.K., and advocating for a northern, working-class perspective in addressing the climate crisis.
He proposes policies such as renationalizing essential services like water and rail, investing in green industries in northern towns, and reforming the tax system to alleviate burdens on working-class communities.
Ali highlights the long-term impacts of austerity and industrial decline in northern cities, advocating for the creation of green jobs to provide opportunities for those affected by unemployment.
His candidacy comes amid growing political restlessness among Muslim voters, many of whom have shifted their support away from the Labour Party over issues including the Gaza genocide.
According to U.K. magazine Hyphen, Ali believes the Green Party could become a natural home for politically disaffected Muslims, offering a genuine alternative to those who feel marginalized.
Since his election, Ali has faced significant challenges, including a barrage of far-right abuse and threats to his family.
Despite these adversities, he remains committed to his community and to representing marginalized voices within the political landscape.
The Green Party’s leadership elections are set to take place in August, with results expected in September.
If successful, Ali would make history as the first Muslim to serve as leader or deputy leader of a major political party in England and Wales.
