Prominent Indian Muslim leader urges probe into Kashmir rights abuses, missing youth, and mass graves
Islamic scholar Zafarul-Islam Khan urges J&K Lt Governor to investigate abuses by security forces and police
NEW DELHI (MNTV) — Prominent Indian Muslim leader and renowned Islamic scholar Dr. Zafarul-Islam Khan has formally written to Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha, urging state authorities to conduct a comprehensive probe into long-standing human rights abuses committed against local Kashmiris.
Dr. Khan, an esteemed intellectual and former Chairman of the Delhi Minorities Commission, welcomed recent reports that the State Investigation Agency (SIA) has opened investigations into past atrocities against Kashmiri Pandits, calling it a positive step toward unearthing the truth.
However, he emphasized that justice must be impartial and requested that security agencies under the Lt. Governor’s direction also investigate alleged abuses against local Kashmiris by security forces, police, and state-supported militants.
In his appeal, Dr. Khan highlighted several critical, unresolved human rights concerns in the region. He called for an official investigation into the estimated 10,000 missing Kashmiri youth to bring closure to hundreds of “half-widows” who still await news on the fate of their husbands.
He also demanded a formal probe into hundreds of “unknown graves” across Kashmir and urged transparent investigations into major historic tragedies, specifically citing the Kunan Poshpora (1991) and Chatti Singhpora (2000) cases.
Beyond historical inquiries, Dr. Khan addressed lingering grievances regarding victims of the 2010 pellet gun incidents, who have yet to receive adequate compensation, medical care, or a formal apology.
He further advocated for the humane treatment and release of long-term political detainees, such as Shabir Shah and Dr. Qasim Faktoo, so they may spend their remaining days with their families.
Dr. Khan concluded his letter by expressing hope that his appeal would receive sympathetic consideration, framing his demands as essential steps toward genuine justice.
