Israeli warplanes violate ceasefire with 12 airstrikes in Lebanon
Israeli warplanes carried out 12 airstrikes across southern and eastern Lebanon on Thursday, in a fresh breach of the ceasefire agreement
BEIRUT, Lebanon (MNTV) — Israeli warplanes carried out 12 airstrikes across southern and eastern Lebanon on Thursday, in a fresh breach of the ceasefire agreement reached last November.
According to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA), two strikes hit the town of Bnaafoul in Sidon and another targeted Khirbet Dweir between Sarafand and Baysariyeh. Additional raids struck areas between Roumine and Houmine in the Nabatieh district.
An Israeli drone also bombed the town of Blida in Marjayoun as residents were harvesting olives.
NNA said the attacks caused loud explosions that sent shockwaves across southern Lebanon, lighting up the night sky and sparking widespread panic.
Israel claimed the attacks targeted Hezbollah weapons depots in the Bekaa Valley and southern regions.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the strikes, accusing Israel of “destroying productive infrastructure” and “obstructing Lebanon’s recovery under false security pretexts.”
Aoun announced plans to increase Lebanese army deployment south of the Litani River to 10,000 troops by the end of 2025 to secure the border after Israel’s withdrawal.
During a meeting with UNIFIL Commander Diodato Abagnara in Beirut, Aoun said the army will gradually assume full control of UN positions as UNIFIL’s withdrawal proceeds through 2027.
Lebanon is also coordinating with several countries to ensure stability in the south following the pullout, he added.
UN Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, established a weapons-free zone between the Blue Line and the Litani River, allowing only Lebanese army and UNIFIL forces in the area.
The November 2024 ceasefire followed a year of cross-border fighting between Hezbollah and Israel that killed over 4,000 people and injured 17,000. Under the truce, Israel was to fully withdraw by January 2025 but continues to occupy five border outposts.
