Israeli MPs ejected from Knesset after demanding US recognize Palestine
Lawmakers Ayman Odeh and Ofer Cassif interrupt Trump’s address, call for recognition of Palestinian statehood
JERUSALEM (AA) – Two Israeli lawmakers were removed from the Knesset on Monday after calling on the United States to recognize Palestinian statehood during US President Donald Trump’s address to the Israeli parliament.
Footage showed Ayman Odeh and Ofer Cassif, both members of the left-wing Hadash Party, raising a paper banner reading “recognize Palestine” and chanting slogans condemning what they called the Gaza genocide before security escorted them out.
The protest came as Trump delivered a speech welcomed with repeated applause from Israeli lawmakers. The US president, who continues to oppose the recognition of a Palestinian state, made no mention of the issue in his remarks.
So far, 159 of 193 UN member states have officially recognized the State of Palestine. During last month’s UN General Assembly meetings, 11 countries — including the UK, France, Canada, and Australia — joined the list.
Trump’s visit to Israel followed Hamas’ release of 20 Israeli hostages under a Gaza ceasefire agreement. He is expected to travel next to Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to co-chair a Gaza peace summit with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Since October 2023, Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed more than 67,800 Palestinians, mostly women and children, leaving the enclave in ruins.
