Israeli forces demolish Palestinian school in occupied West Bank
Palestinian officials condemn the demolition as a violation of international law and accuse Israel of targeting children's right to education
RAMALLAH, Palestine (MNTV) — Israeli forces demolished the Yanon Mixed Basic School in the Khirbet Yanon hamlet of the northern occupied West Bank on Thursday, according to Palestinian media, prompting condemnation from Palestinian authorities.
The official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that the demolition came after years of sustained pressure on the small community, where Israeli military measures and settler activity had steadily displaced residents.
Khirbet Yanon has faced repeated efforts to remove its Palestinian population. By Dec. 28, 2025, nearly all residents had left the hamlet, leaving only one family behind after the closure of the government-run school.
Wafa said the village had been home to 16 Palestinian families for around two decades before repeated attacks, movement restrictions and limitations on farming and daily life forced most residents to leave. The report did not specify where the displaced families had relocated.
The Palestinian Ministry of Education condemned the demolition, describing it as another attack on Palestinian children and saying it constituted a breach of international humanitarian law and international agreements that protect educational institutions and guarantee the right to education.
The ministry said the destruction formed part of what it called a systematic policy aimed at weakening the Palestinian education sector, increasing pressure on local communities and denying children access to schooling.
It pledged to continue coordinating with partner organizations to ensure students can continue their education despite ongoing Israeli actions.
The ministry also urged the international community, the United Nations and human rights organizations to take immediate steps to safeguard educational institutions in Palestine, hold Israel accountable for repeated violations against schools and students, and prevent further attacks on the education sector.
