Iran announces new Supreme Leader has been chosen, identity kept secret
Iran's Assembly of Experts has selected a successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike
TEHRAN (MNTV) — Iran’s Assembly of Experts has selected a successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike, a senior Iranian cleric confirmed on Sunday — though the identity of the new leader remains undisclosed.
Ahmad Alamolhoda, a prominent Iranian cleric, dismissed swirling speculation that the assembly had yet to reach a decision, calling such reports entirely false.
Speaking to the Mehr News Agency, he confirmed that a leadership vote had taken place and a new supreme leader had been chosen.
“All rumors and reports suggesting that the Assembly of Experts has not yet made a decision are completely false,” Alamolhoda stated.
He also noted that under Iran’s Constitution, assembly members are bound by their votes once cast and cannot reverse them.
The formal public announcement, he added, rests with Ayatollah Hashem Hosseini Bushehri, the official tasked with communicating the assembly’s decision to the nation.
Khamenei was among more than 1,200 people — including other senior military officials — reported killed since U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran began on February 28, according to Iranian government figures. Over 10,000 others have been wounded in the attacks.
Iran has responded with retaliatory drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as Gulf states hosting US military installations.
