GTA News: New Scarborough Busway Coming Next Month.
August 20, 2026. Scarborough, Ontario. Toronto’s transit agency says it is on schedule to open its new Scarborough busway by the end of September, completing the transformation of a decommissioned subway line that was permanently shut down after a derailment in July 2023.
On Thursday, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) announced it would open the Busway on September 30, a date it said will wrap up the project six months earlier than originally scheduled.
Speaking at the occasion, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow promised that “Scarborough residents will be getting faster and much more affordable transit. By September 30, more than 118,000 riders each week will save over an hour traveling on the speedy Busway. No lights, no congestion, nothing to slow you down. The final layer of asphalt is down, the lights are up, the signals are installed. And with fare capping also coming into effect in September, the more you ride, the less you pay. Most evenings and weekends will be free for people who work five days a week and take the TTC.”
Echoing Mayor Chow’s sentiments, Jamaal Myers, TTC chair, stated that “Transit riders in Scarborough deserve high-quality, reliable transit service that works for them. This to-be-launched Busway will serve thousands of TTC customers while the subway extension is being completed and will continue to expand and enhance transit in the city.”
Transforming the former LRT infrastructure into a busway has long been favored by city hall, with some staff suggesting that buses running along the old route would reach Scarborough Town Center seven minutes faster than driving there in traffic.
Notably, the replacement busway will run four kilometers along the old Scarborough RT route, and a trip from one end to the other is estimated to take 15 minutes.
Top 3 Takeaways from this announcement.
- The four-kilometer route will run from Kennedy Station to Scarborough Town Center along the former RT corridor.
- Eight bus routes will use the Busway, with stops at Lawrence East and Ellesmere stations.
- The temporary Busway will eventually be replaced by the three-stop Scarborough Subway Extension, expected to open in the 2030s.
