GTA Crime Alert: “Distraction” Thefts on the Rise! Thieves Are Now Using Children to Deceive Their Victims.
September 30, 2026. Peel Regional Police report receiving 266 reports of distraction thefts so far this year, a dramatic increase from just 25 such incidents reported in the region in 2024.
These alarming figures come just days after a prominent GTA news channel reported on the case of a 79-year-old woman from Brampton, Ontario, who was targeted during a distraction theft. Police say she had approximately $19,000 worth of gold jewelry stolen from her.
Authorities indicate that 77 percent of reported distraction thefts this year involved gold jewelry, and nearly 85 percent occurred between noon and 4 p.m.
“These incidents can happen in a matter of seconds. Suspects often rely on appearing friendly or helpful to gain the victim’s trust,” said Peel Police Deputy Chief Marc Andrews.
“We want residents to recognize these tactics, trust their instincts, and create distance if something doesn’t feel right.”
In a news release issued today (Wednesday), officials explained that distraction thefts typically involve one or more individuals creating a diversion while stealing a victim’s personal belongings.
Older adults are frequently targeted, often while alone, outside their homes or in public spaces. Police note that suspects may approach victims asking for directions, offering gifts, or trying to engage them in conversation.
One notable case involves a 79-year-old Indian woman in Brampton. The incident occurred while she was walking near Chinguacousy Road and Sandalwood Parkway West at about 6 p.m., just a few meters from Bovaird Drive West.
According to police, two women in a white SUV approached her. One of the women got out, touched the victim’s feet, and hugged her. During this interaction, the suspect allegedly swapped the victim’s gold necklace for a metal one and removed three gold bangles from her wrists. The jewelry was valued at approximately $19,000.
The victim’s son, Raghavendra Kumar, reported that his mother was left shaken by the incident and has since stopped her regular walks outside.
Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the incident and have identified a white Chevrolet Equinox as a vehicle of interest, although they have not yet identified its license plate.
Speaking at a news conference, police stated that suspects use various strategies to lure victims, one of which involves using children to create a false sense of security.
“We’ve seen cases where not only adults are involved, but children are also present in the vehicle,” Detective Nick Arakgi told reporters.
